IDEO.org, its brands, affiliates, and subsidiaries (“we,” “our,” or “us”) values your privacy. This Privacy Policy (“Policy”) describes how we may collect personal information and our information practices regarding personal information when you visit our websites (“Sites”) or otherwise interact with us, online or offline (collectively, use our “Services”).

By using our Services, you agree that your personal information will be handled as described in this Policy. Your use of our Services and any dispute over privacy, is subject to this Policy and our Terms of Use, available at https://www.ideo.org/terms-of-use, including their applicable terms governing limitations on damages and the resolution of disputes.

Depending on how you interact or engage with us, we may provide you with other privacy notices, which contain additional details about our information practices. For example, this Policy does not apply to job applicants and candidates who apply for employment with us, or to employees in the context of the employment relationship.

IDEO.org is a non-profit organization located in the U.S., and our Site is based in the U.S. Accordingly, we process your personal information in the U.S.

1. Personal Information We Collect

As further described below, we may collect personal information directly from you, automatically through your use of our Services, and from other, third-party sources. To the extent permitted by applicable law, we may combine the personal information we collect from publicly available or third-party sources.

Personal Information We Collect Directly From You: While the type of information we collect from you depends on how you use our Services and our interactions with you, in general, we may collect the following personal information directly from you:

  • Contact Information and Other Identifiers. When you contact us, including if you sign up to learn more about our Services or otherwise communicate with us, we may collect your first and last name, email address, organization name, and location information. If you are a Food Security Challenge participant, we may also collect your city, country, and LinkedIn URL.
  • Financial Information. When you make a donation, we may also collect your payment information and contribution history.
  • Survey Responses. When you fill out our surveys, we may collect your survey responses, including information regarding your preferences and your opinion about our Services. Participation in our surveys is voluntary.
  • Communications and Interactions. When you email, call, or otherwise communicate with members of our team, we collect and maintain a record of your contact details, communications, and responses. We also maintain records of communications and information that you may post in our forums or on our social media channels, and information you provide to us related to any support requests. 

Personal Information We Collect Automatically. We may automatically collect personal information related to your use of our Services, including through the use of cookies, pixel tags, and other similar technologies. The personal information we may collect automatically includes:

  • Device and Browsing Information. When you visit our Site or use our Services, we may collect IP address, browser type, domain names, access times, date/time stamps, operating system, language, device type, unique ID, Internet service provider, referring and exiting URLs, clickstream data, and similar device and browsing information.
  • Activities and Usage. We may also collect activity information related to your use of the Site, such as information about the links clicked, features used, items viewed, time spent within the Site, your interactions with us within the Site, and other activity and usage information.
  • Location Information. We may also collect or derive location information about you, such as through your IP address.

Personal Information We Collect From Other Sources. We may also collect or obtain personal information about you through our affiliates, business partners and from other third-party sources, such as public databases, data analytics providers, Internet service providers, operating systems and platforms, vendors, and service providers who provide services on our behalf.

2. How We May Use Personal Information

We collect personal information about you for the following purposes:

  • Services and Support. To provide you with our Services, which may include communicating with you about your use of our Site and Services, responding to your inquiries, working with our third-party providers to process your donations and to otherwise run our day-to-day operations.
  • Analytics and Improvement. To better understand how users access and use our Site and Services and for other research and analytics purposes such as to evaluate, develop, and improve our Services and for internal quality control and training purposes.
  • Research and Surveys. To administer surveys and questionnaires, such as for market research or user satisfaction purposes.
  • Food Security Competition Participation. If you are a Food Security Competition participant, we may use your personal information to carry out the Food Security Competition including in order to administer the website, connect you with other participants, and to otherwise execute the program.
  • Customization and Personalization. To tailor the content and information that we may send or display to you, provide personalized help and instructions, and to otherwise personalize your experiences while using the Site.
  • Marketing and Promotions. For marketing and promotional purposes, including, for example, to send you newsletters and promotions or to otherwise contact you about projects and opportunities we think may interest you.
  • Security and Protection of Rights. To protect our Services and business operations and to protect our rights or those of our stakeholders; to prevent and detect fraud, unauthorized activities and access, and other misuse; where we believe necessary to investigate or take action against illegal activities, suspected fraud, situations involving potential threats to the safety or legal rights of any person or third party, or violations of our Terms of Use.
  • Compliance and Legal Process. To comply with applicable legal or regulatory obligations, including as part of a judicial proceeding; to respond to a subpoena, warrant, court order, or other legal process; or as part of an investigation or request, whether formal or informal, from law enforcement or a governmental authority.
  • Auditing, Reporting, and Other Internal Operations. To conduct financial, tax, and accounting audits; audits and assessments of our operations, privacy, security and financial controls, risk, and compliance with legal obligations; our general business, accounting, record keeping and legal functions, and to maintain appropriate business records and enforce company policies and procedures.
  • General Business and Operational Support. To assess and implement mergers, acquisitions, reorganizations, bankruptcies, and other business transactions such as financing, and to administer our business, accounting, auditing, compliance, recordkeeping, and legal functions.

3. How We May Disclose Personal Information

We may disclose the personal information we collect for the purposes described above and as follows:

  • Affiliates, Subsidiaries, and Partners. We may disclose the personal information we collect with our affiliates, subsidiaries, non-profit and philanthropy partners, and branch offices.
  • Food Security Competition Participants. If you are a Food Security Competition participant, you may choose to post information in our Food Security Competition learning community including in related forums and on the website. This information may be disclosed to other participants convened on the website and in the learning community. In addition, your name, email, LinkedIn, organization, and location (city and country) will be visible to other participants within the learning community.
  • Vendors and Service Providers. We may disclose the personal information we collect to vendors and service providers who provide services on our behalf such as IT and website hosting, marketing and marketing research providers, customer support, data storage, payment processing providers, data analytics providers, auditors, consultants, and legal counsel.
  • Marketing and Analytics Providers. We may also disclose your personal information, such as device and browsing, and activities and usage information, to marketing and advertising networks, data analytics providers, and other companies who provide marketing or analytics services on our behalf. For more information see the “Cookies and Other Tracking Mechanisms” section below.

We may also disclose your personal information in the following circumstances:

  • To Operate Our Business. We may disclose personal information to our business partners, affiliates, service providers, and other vendors in order to operate our business, provide our Services, and otherwise run our day-to-day operations.
  • In Support of Business Transfers. If we or our affiliates are or may be acquired by, merged with, or invested in by another company, or if any of our assets are or may be transferred to another company, whether as part of a bankruptcy or insolvency proceeding or otherwise, we may disclose or transfer the personal information we have collected from you to the other company. We may also disclose certain personal information as necessary prior to the completion of such a transaction or other corporate transaction such as a financing or restructuring, to lenders, auditors, and third-party advisors, including attorneys and consultants.

Compliance and Legal Obligations. To comply with legal and compliance obligations and to respond to the legal process. For example, we may disclose personal information in response to subpoenas, court orders, or other lawful requests by regulators or other government officials, including responding to national security or law enforcement disclosure requirements.

4. Cookies and Similar Tracking Technologies

We use cookies, pixel tags, and other similar tracking mechanisms to automatically collect information about browsing activity, type of device, and similar information within our Site. We use this information to, for example, analyze and understand how you access, use, and interact with our Services, to identify and resolve bugs and errors in our Services, to assess, secure, protect, optimize, and improve the performance of our Services, as well as for marketing and advertising purposes, analytics purposes, and to personalize content in our Services. We may also aggregate such information to analyze trends, administer our Services, and gather broad demographic information for aggregate uses.

  • Cookies. “Cookies” are alphanumeric identifiers we transfer to your device’s hard drive through your web browser for tracking purposes. Some cookies allow us to make it easier for you to navigate our Services, while others are used to enable a faster log-in process, support the security and performance of the Services, or allow us to track activity and usage data within the Services.
  • Pixel Tags. Pixel tags (sometime called web beacons or clear GIFs) are tiny graphics with a unique identifier, similar in function to cookies. While cookies are stored locally on your device, pixel tags are embedded invisibly within web pages and online content. We may use these, in connection with our Services to, among other things, track users and to help us manage content and compile usage statistics. We may also use these in our emails to let us know when they have been opened or forwarded, so we can track response rates and gauge the effectiveness of our communications.
  • Third-Party Advertising. We work with third-party ad networks, analytics, marketing partners, and others (“third-party ad companies”) to personalize content and display advertising within our Services, as well as to manage our advertising on third-party sites. We and these third-party ad companies may use cookies, pixel tags, and other tools to collect browsing and activity information within our Services (as well as on third-party sites and services), as well as IP address, unique ID, cookie and advertising IDs, and other online identifiers. We and these third-party ad companies use this information to provide you with more relevant ads and content within our Services and on third-party sites and to evaluate the success of such ads and content.
  • Third-Party Analytics. We use third party tools, such as Google Analytics, which are operated by third party companies, to evaluate usage of our Site and Services. These third-party analytics companies use cookies, pixels, and other tracking technologies to collect usage data about our Services to provide us with reports and metrics that help us evaluate usage of our Services, improve our Site, and enhance performance and user experiences.   • Cross-Device Tracking. We and our providers may use the information we collect about you within our Services and on other third-party websites and services to help us and these third parties identify other devices that you use (e.g., a mobile phone, tablet, other computer, etc.) to interact or engage with us or the Services.
  • Do Not Track: Currently, our Site and Services do not recognize browser “do-not-track” requests. You may, however, disable certain tracking as discussed below.

5. Your Privacy Choices

We make available several ways for you to manage your preferences and privacy choices, as described below:

  • Cookie Settings. To prevent cookies from tracking your activity on our Site or visits across multiple websites, you can set your browser to block certain cookies or notify you when a cookie is set; you can also delete cookies. The “Help” portion of the toolbar on most browsers will tell you how to prevent your device from accepting new cookies, how to have the browser notify you when you receive a new cookie, or how to delete cookies. Visitors to our Site who disable cookies will be able to browse the Sites, but some features may not function.
  • Industry Ad Choice Programs. You can also control how participating third-party ad companies use the information that they collect about your visits to our Site to display more relevant targeted advertising to you. If you are in the U.S., you can obtain more information and opt out of receiving targeted ads from participating third-party ad networks at aboutads.info/choices (Digital Advertising Alliance). You may also download the DAA AppChoices tool (https://youradchoices.com/appchoices) in order to help control interest-based advertising on apps on your mobile device. Opting out of participating third party ad networks does not opt you out of being served advertising. You may continue to receive generic or "contextual" ads on our Services. You may also continue to receive targeted ads on other websites, from companies that do not participate in the above programs.
  • Marketing Emails and Other Communications. We invite people who are interested in hearing more about our activities to sign up for our newsletters and to share their creative inputs, outputs, and views. When signing up for our newsletter you consent to us providing you with relevant marketing emails. If you have previously signed up for our newsletter and would like to unsubscribe, you may opt-out of these communications at any time by using the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email or by emailing us at privacy@ideo.org.

6. External Links and Features

Our Site and Services may contain links to third-party websites or features. Any access to and use of a linked website or feature is not governed by this Policy and is instead governed by the third party’s privacy policy. We are not responsible for the information practices of such third parties, including their collection of your personal information. We recommend reviewing third parties’ privacy policies and terms before using those sites.

7. Social Networking Sites

We operate and maintain social networking pages and venues on websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, YouTube, and Instagram. If you post to any of our social networking pages, you understand that you are providing information to the public and do so at your own risk. Further, by posting to any of our social networking pages on other websites you agree that we may use these postings on our Site and other websites without further notice or compensation to you. Please visit the privacy policies of any third-party websites before posting to our pages there.

8. Data Security

We have implemented safeguards that are intended to protect the personal information we collect from loss, misuse, and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, and destruction. Please be aware that despite our efforts, no data security measures can guarantee security.

9. Children’s Information

Our Services are not designed for children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 18. If you are a parent or legal guardian and you believe we have unintentionally collected your child’s personal information, please contact us to request we delete the information at privacy@ideo.org.

10. Additional Information for Residents of Certain Jurisdictions

This section of the Policy provides additional information for residents of certain jurisdictions in accordance with applicable privacy laws.

Grounds for Processing Personal Information. We may process your personal information based on the following grounds:

  • With your consent: Generally speaking, we will process your personal information based on your consent, for example (where required by law) to send you marketing communications (such as newsletters), surveys, and updates; or when Food Security Competition participants use our dedicated portal. We do not usually collect or process sensitive personal information, but if we do, we will do so solely with your explicit consent. Where our processing of personal information is based on your consent, you may withdraw your consent at any time; please see the “Your Privacy Choices” and “Privacy Rights” sections for information on how to withdraw your consent.
  • To perform a contract with you. In limited cases, we process your personal information to perform our obligations under an agreement with you such as Terms of Use for Food Security Competition participants’ use our dedicated portal.
  • For our legitimate interests. Depending on the circumstances, in limited cases we may process personal information in furtherance of our legitimate interests, where those interests are not overridden by your rights, freedoms and interests.
  • To comply with a legal obligation. In some circumstances, we may be legally required to collect and process your personal information, for example, to pass it on to the police if criminal activity is suspected.

Transfers of Personal Information. IDEO.org has operations, entities, and service providers in the United States and throughout the world. As such, we may collect personal information from and transfer personal information to the United States and other jurisdictions where we, our affiliates, and service providers have operations. Some of these jurisdictions (including the United States) may not provide equivalent levels of data protection compared to your home jurisdiction. We will take steps to ensure that such personal information receives an adequate level of protection in the jurisdictions in which we process it, which depending on circumstances may include appropriate written data processing terms and/or data transfer agreements.

Data Retention. We retain your personal information for as long as reasonably necessary to fulfill the purposes for which it was collected or as otherwise necessary to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, maintain appropriate business records, and enforce our agreements. We typically retain certain elements of your personal information for a period of time corresponding to a statute of limitation, for example to maintain an accurate record of your dealings with us, such as pursuant to a contract so that we can raise or defend a legal claim. In some circumstances, we may retain personal information for other periods of time for instance where we are required or permitted to do so in accordance with legal requirements, or if required to do so by a legal process, legal authority, or other governmental entity having authority to make the request, for so long as required. We may also retain your personal information for a longer period in the event of a complaint or in anticipation of litigation. 

In some circumstances, we will anonymize your personal information (so that it can no longer be associated with you) for research or statistical purposes, in which case we may retain this information indefinitely without further notice to you. 

Where required by law we will take reasonable steps to destroy or de-identify your personal information when it is no longer needed for the purposes for which it was collected and/or the purposes for which you provided consent.

Privacy Rights. Depending upon circumstances, residents of certain jurisdictions may have the following rights with respect to our processing of their personal information, subject to applicable conditions and limitations.

  • Access. You may have the right to obtain information about our processing of your personal information and to obtain access to and a copy of your personal information.
  • Rectification/Correction. You may have the right to update, complete, or correct inaccuracies in your personal information.
  • Erasure/Deletion. You may have the right to have your personal information deleted.
  • Portability. You may have the right to obtain a machine-readable copy of your personal information or to have us transfer it to a third party.
  • Restriction. You may have the right to restrict the processing of your personal information, meaning we will not further process your personal information except to store it.
  • Withdrawal of consent. You may have the right to withdraw your consent to our processing of your personal information, without affecting the lawfulness of our processing up until withdrawal.
  • Objection. You may have the right to object, on grounds relating to your particular situation, to the processing of your personal information. You may also have the right to object to the processing of your personal information for direct marketing (including profiling) purposes.

In addition, depending on where you reside, you may have the right to file a complaint with a local authority.

11. Changes to this Policy

This Policy is reviewed and updated regularly. If we change this Policy, we will post the updated Policy here, and those changes will go into effect on the “last updated” date shown above. We will take your continued use of our Services to mean you accept the terms of the updated Policy. We will not retroactively use or share your personal information for materially different purposes without first taking reasonable steps to provide you notice.
