Helping small-scale farmers in West Timor, Indonesia, embrace traditional farming methods and adopt innovative food preservation technologies to create a sustainable, resilient local food system.
Kopernik is an Indonesia-based research and development (R&D) lab for social and environmental challenges. Through lean experimentation and collaboration with partners across the development, public, creative, and private sectors, Kopernik develops, tests, and implements products, services, and strategies that uplift underserved communities. With support from the Global Innovation Challenge, Kopernick will strengthen its Hai Mnahat Program. Translating to "our food" in the Dawan language, Hai Mnahat seeks to address food insecurity in West Timor by revitalizing indigenous farming practices, experimenting with innovative food preservation technologies, and introducing a circular economy to communities in Soe. In addition to improving local food security, the program strengthens micro-agribusinesses and local products, promoting environmentally sustainable economic growth in the community. By revitalizing traditional food systems and promoting sustainable economic growth, the ultimate goal of this program is to create a more resilient and self-sustaining food system in the region, and build a climate-resilient community.
