WhyHunger

United States

Project Summary

Working with agriculture schools that provide intensive, hands-on education to help students produce food for their families and communities in Spain, Thailand, Colombia, Paraguay, Dominican Republic, and the United States and establishing new schools in Brazil, Panama, Peru and Sri Lanka.

WhyHunger envisions a world without hunger through small-scale agriculture and collaborative processes led by land and water workers. Known as agroecology, this method empowers communities to become independent from the industrial food system, protect resources, and advocate for sustainable policies. Globally practiced, agroecology reduces hunger, fosters economic stability, cools the planet, and enhances democratic engagement.

With support from the Global Innovation Challenge, WhyHunger is creating agroecology schools and farmer-to-farmer trainings in eight countries across four regions. These community-led schools provide hands-on education to small-scale producers and youth, equipping them to produce food and train others in their communities. Representatives will collaborate to develop a scalable, shared learning model.

Charity alone won't end hunger. WhyHunger empowers grassroots organizations and communities to develop real solutions, address systemic inequities, and build a just, sustainable food system.
