Food Security

The Black Farmer Fund

United States

Project Summary

Supporting Black farmers and Black-owned food businesses in the Northeast region of the U.S. with a community-based approach to making investments and providing entrepreneurial guidance.

Black Farmer Fund (BFF) addresses food insecurity and economic disparities in Black communities by investing in Black farmers and food businesses in the Northeast. Our mission is to build wealth and health in Black communities with reparative capital, informed by historical discrimination. Beyond food access, we engage Black people as owners throughout the food supply chain.

We foster learning and relationships through interactive community workdays, skill shares, and holistic technical assistance. A highlight is our community-led decision-making process. Our Investment Committee, composed of 10 Black food actors, ensures those with lived experiences in food and farming lead in identifying and addressing needs.

Our innovative funding model integrates grants and loans, providing patient capital tailored to Black food actors. The launch of BFF 2.0, a $20 million integrated capital fund, supports these entrepreneurs with flexible, reparative funding, addressing both immediate financial needs and long-term sustainability.
