Launching a program in the Dominican Republic for migrants and stateless individuals living in rural communities to farm, learn soil conservation methods, establish cooperatives and build local food networks.
Heartland Alliance International (HAI) fosters community resilience during humanitarian crises, operating in Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Chicago. HAI focuses on mental health, gender equity, access to justice, and stigma-free HIV prevention and treatment, championing innovative human rights protection.
Supported by the Citi Foundation, HAI's Semillas de Esperanza (Seeds of Hope) project in the Dominican Republic enhances food security and nutrition among vulnerable populations, including migrants and stateless individuals in overpopulated rural bateyes with inadequate infrastructure.
HAI promotes quality nutrition and healthy eating habits, creating participatory community initiatives to improve access to affordable, quality food and secure stable livelihoods. By May 2025, HAI surveyed 226 households on food access and quality, engaged 380 individuals in nutrition workshops, and trained 37 women in entrepreneurship. These efforts highlight HAI’s commitment to significant, lasting change in the communities it serves.
