Leveraging farmers markets to distribute fresh produce to communities with limited access and is expanding its programming to Washington, DC, Northern Virginia and Maryland.
FRESHFARM’s Pop-Up Food Hub (PUFH) connects small- and mid-sized farmers, especially Black and Brown farmers, with wholesale partners to boost their businesses and provide fresh produce to underserved communities in DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia.
Their Market Share program, similar to traditional CSAs, aggregates the best local, seasonal produce from various farms for individual and family distribution. Bags come in personal and family sizes and are offered at retail and subsidized, SNAP-eligible prices to ensure everyone, regardless of income, has access to healthy local produce.
In 2023, they expanded their efforts, increasing farmer revenue by 15% from 2022. Partnerships with nearly 90 organizations, including education centers, senior centers, nonprofits, and clinics, generated over $600,000 for 37 farmers, 24% of whom are Black and Brown, making up 66% of their revenue.
